SO…WHAT IS RAPESEED & HOW DOES IT END UP AS OIL?

Well…it starts its life as a vibrant yellow flower.

Once these flowers are harvested, the seeds are separated from the rest of the plant. It’s a delicate process as the seeds are tiny (2mm in diameter to be exact!), but each seed is extremely important as this is where all the oil is!

We then take the seed and clean it to remove all the left over bits and pieces, like plants, dirt and stones. Once clean, the seed is fed into a cold seed-press, which uses a screw system to release the oil.

We like to use the traditional and natural process of ‘cold-pressing’ to extract the oil from our rapeseed. It’s a slower process than refined oil’s (such as Olive Oil), which is produced with chemical and heat processing. By cold-pressing rape-seed at a temperature below 40°C, we avoid using chemicals or solvents and keep all their natural goodness!

Rather than using different types of rapeseed, we are dedicated to using a single variety seed to maintain consistency across all our products. To guarantee the purity of our oil, we triple filter it (YES, that’s right…TRIPLE filter!) to remove any leftover sediment. This gives us the lightest, clearest oil possible which we then bottle ready to send straight onto the shelves!

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE RAPESEED OIL?

We’re glad you asked as there are many positive reasons…

Rapeseed oil is one of the healthiest oils you can use.

There are lots of different oils out there…some are high in unhealthy saturated fats and others are much lower…like rapeseed oil. This makes it better for your heart and your brain.

What oil do you have in your cupboard? Take a look at the chart below to see how much saturated fat there is in your favourite oil…

As you can see from the chart, Rapeseed oil is a great source of Omega 3, 6 and 9…having 10 times more natural Omega 3 than olive oil!

There is nothing nasty in rapeseed oil…it’s completely natural.

  • 50 % less saturated fat than extra virgin olive oil
  • As if these health benefits weren’t enough…rapeseed oil is also a good source of Vitamin E.
  • The temperature at which any oil will start to break down and have the potential to catch fire, is called its smoke point. Rapeseed has a high burn point making it great for many different cooking methods including baking, roasting, stir-frying and deep and shallow frying.
  • It is suitable for a variety of diets including gluten-free, vegetarian, Halal and Kosher

WHAT DOES COLD-PRESSED MEAN?

Well, put simply, cold-pressing means pressing the seed to extract oil from the seed without using heat or chemicals!

The rapeseed oil we produce is cold-pressed mechanically and therefore is un-refined. Refined oils are pressed using chemicals and heat.

Cold pressed oils are incredibly versatile and are ideal for everything from cooking oil, marinades and salad dressings to dips, and sauces.

With cold-pressed rapeseed oil, what you see is what you get, exactly as it comes out of the seed. We triple filter ours to make it extra light and delicious!

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF OMEGA 3, 6 & 9?

Fatty acids are important for all systems of the body to function normally. There are two essential fatty acids (EFA), that your body does not produce on its own and must be ingested…Omega-3 and Omega-6, both found naturally in rapeseed along with Omega-9.

Benefits include:

  • Brain function
  • Heart health
  • Growth and development
  • Stimulate skin and hair growth
  • Maintain bone health
  • Regulate metabolism
  • Maintain the reproductive system
  • Balanced cholesterol
  • Improves immune function

By using the process of cold-pressing we are able to preserve the benefits of the fatty acids, which would be destroyed if we were to cook the oil.
